THE POSSESSIVE FORM OF NOUNS

Forming the possessive
The possessive form is used with nouns referring to people, groups of people, countries, and animals. 'Belonging to' or 'ownership' is one of the relationships it expresses :
•    John owns a car. ('John' is the possessor or owner)
•    It is John's car.

•    America has some gold reserves. ('America' is the owner)
•    They are America's gold reserves.
It can also express other relationships, for example:
where someone works or studies or spends time:
•    John goes to this school. This is John's school.
•    John sleeps in this room. This is John's room.
a family relationship:
•    John's mother
•    The Queen's daughter
qualities:
•    John's patience.
•    The politician's hypocrisy.
Form
To form the possessive, add 's ('apostrophe -s') to the noun.
If the noun is plural, or already ends in -s, just add:' (an apostrophe).
For names ending in -s:
In speaking we add the sound /z/ to the name, but in writing it is possible to use either 's or just '. The 's form is more common. e.g. Thomas's book, James's shop.
Examples
•    The car of John = John's car.
•    The room of the girls = The girls' room.
•    Clothes for men = Men's clothes.
•    The sister of Charles = Charles' sister.
•    The boat of the sailors = The sailors' boat.
There are also some fixed expressions where the possessive form is used:
Time expressions    Other expressions
a day's work    For God's sake!
a fortnight's holiday    a pound's worth of apples.
a month's pay    the water's edge
today's newspaper    a stone's throw away (= very near)
in a year's time     at death's door (= very ill)
in my mind's eye (= in my imagination)
The possessive is also used to refer to shops, restaurants, churches and colleges, using the name or job title of the owner.
Examples:
the grocer's    the doctor's    the vet's
the newsagent's    the chemist's    Smith's
the dentist's    Tommy Tucker's    Luigi's
Saint Mary's    Saint James's
1.    Shall we go to Luigi's for lunch?
2.    I've got an appointment at the dentist's at eleven o'clock.

AUXILIARY VERBS

Auxiliary verbs adalah kata kerja bantu yang secara gramatikal berfungsi membentuk atau memberi tambahan arti pada kalimat. Umumnya auxiliary verbs digunakan bersama-sama dengan kata kerja utama (main verbs) dan membantunya membentuk struktur gramatikal sebuah kalimat.

Ada tiga auxiliary verbs: to be, to do, dan to have. Be, do, dan have tidak mempunyai makna jika berdiri sendiri sebagai auxiliary verbs, meskipun begitu dalam bahasa Indonesia umumnya diartikan sebagai “sedang”, “telah”, “apakah”, atau “sungguh-sungguh”.

To Be
Auxiliary verbs yang biasa digunakan adalah be, am, is, are, was, were, being, been. Sebagai auxiliary verbs, to be biasa digunakan bersama past participle untuk membuat kalimat passive dan bersama present participle untuk membuat kalimat continuous.

Contoh:
- He is watching TV.
- We are teaching you about helping verbs.

- Small fish are eaten by big fish.
- He was killed in the war.
- The agencies were completing the inventories.
- I will be seeing him soon.
- He had only been trying to help.
- The house is being painted.

To Do
Auxiliary verbs yang digunakan adalah do, does, did. Sebagai auxiliary verbs, to do biasa digunakan bersama-sama kata kerja utama (main verbs) membentuk kalimat pertanyaan atau kalimat negatif. Dan juga dipakai untuk memberikan tekanan atau menghindari pengulangan kata kerja utama. Auxiliary verbs ini dikenal juga dengan istilah dummy operator atau dummy auxiliary.

Contoh:
- Do you like bananas?
- I don't feel like going out tonight.

- Where do you live?
- Don't forget to write.
- It doesn't matter if you win or lose.
- I didn't know what to do.
- What did you do with that notebook?
- He speaks faster than she does.
- I do understand.

To Have
Auxiliary verbs yang digunakan adalah have, has, had. Sebagai auxiliary verbs, to have digunakan bersama main verbs untuk membuat kalimat perfect.

Contoh:
- I have completed my work.
- She has acted in a film.

- They had forgotten to send the letter.
- Our guests have arrived.
- Has anyone phoned?
- I hadn’t seen him for fifteen years.
- Someone should have predicted these complications.

Catatan

Be, do, dan have juga berfungsi sebagai main verbs atau principal verbs. Perhatikan contoh berikut dibawah ini.
- She is a good singer. (Principal verb)
- She is singing. (Auxiliary verb)

Auxiliary verbs juga biasa disebut dengan istilah helping verbs.

Semoga bermanfaat dan mohon maaf jika ada kekurangan.

FUNCTION AND CLASSES OF DETERMINERS
Function
Determiners are words placed in front of a noun to make it clear what the noun refers to.
The word 'people' by itself is a general reference to some group of human beings. If someone says 'these people', we know which group they are talking about, and if they say 'a lot of people' we know how big the group is.

There are several classes of determiners:
Definite and Indefinite articles

Direct and Indirect Speech (part 2)

Dalam pembahasan Direct and Indirect Speech, akan akrab dan dikenal kata pelaporannya. Kata yang biasa digunakan adalah; say, ask, order, advise.

Apabila kata pelaporan yang digunakan berbentuk present (; say, ask, order, advise) maka kata yang dikeluarkan si pembicara juga dalam bentuk present.
Contoh: Direct: He says, "you are jealous". Indirect : He says I am jealous.

Dan ingat apabila kata pelaporannya berbentuk past ( said, asked, ordered, advised), maka kalimat yang diucapkan  pembicara harus berbentuk past juga.
Contoh: Direct: He said, " I want to speak to you". Indirect: He said that he wanted to speak to me.
Note: kata pelaporan sangat menentukan dalam pengucapan Indirect speech. Jangan lupa membuang tanda petik apabila menulis Indirect speech.

Yang sangat penting diketahui juga adalah tentang perubahan kata-kata sebagai berikut:

I menjadi  me
you menjadi I, he, she
we menjadi they
our menjadi their
here menjadi there
ago menjadi before
now menjadi then
this menjadi that.

Cara mudah menguasai grammar adalah dengan mempraktekan secara oral. Silahkan dilatih bersama rekan anda.
